Vision and Aims

Our Vision

With a unique environment, so close to Chislehurst Commons, Chislehurst has the setting and the amenity to become one of London’s most outstanding destination High Streets, combining high quality retail outlets, attractive cafes and restaurants, and diverse and interesting food shops.

Our vision for Chislehurst is for an attractive, bustling village with a distinct identity that successfully uses its heritage as a backdrop. We seek a vibrant trading environment where small independent shops and businesses thrive and where there is always something going on.  We aim to meet both the day to day needs of local people and to attract visitors.

Key aims

  • Improve traffic flows around the High Street, including the Willow Grove junction
  • Improve and rationalise the parking facilities around the High Street
  • Enhance the streetscape, provide for a visitor friendly ‘café culture’ and address the issue of persistently empty properties
  • Maintain and enhance the village feel of the High Street, its identity, branding and experience
  • Attract new businesses and visitors, and retain the existing ones as appropriate
  • Fill empty units with quality businesses and identify other areas for development or improvement
  • Develop community events and initiatives to promote footfall
  • Address the aspects that deter shoppers, visitors, landlords and businesses from the High Street.

The Town Team’s Proposals

From its inception in April 2012, and using the results of the residents’ questionnaire commissioned by the Chislehurst Society, the Chislehurst Town Team identified the key challenges facing the High Street. That work forms the basis for the development of short, medium and longer term plans for the future of the town centre.

We have also conceived a Shopfront Design Guide that can be downloaded here.
