Popchoir is London’s largest contemporary choir with branches across the Capital and surrounds, including here in Chislehurst. Started by Helen Hampton in 2008, the idea was to give anyone who loves to sing the chance to do so without audition or the need to read music.
Helen says “I’ve been a professional singer all my life and people have always said “how wonderful – I wish I could do that” and I thought “well, why not?” Singing is the most fantastic thing to do – it makes you feel good in so many ways and has proven health benefits both physically and mentally. So ! thought what better way than to give people the opportunity to sing the songs that they like, as part of a choir.”
Popchoir is open to anyone from 18 to 108 regardless of experience – in fact most of our members have started out by saying they can’t sing! However, singing in a group is a great way to find your voice and increase your confidence without having the the spotlight on you, and you can see that’s true when you see and hear our choirs perform.
Popchoir performances range from local events such as the Chislehurst Farmers Market and the Christmas Fair & Lights Parade, to large events such as the Ideal Home Show, the South Bank Chorus Festival, Sing Out at the Hackney Empire and performing with artists such as Josh Groban, Foreigner and Blake.
New members are welcome at any time and you can come along and try a free taster session without obligation. And being part of Popchoir is so much more than the singing. The sense of community across all our choirs is wonderful and so it’s a great way to meet new friends and have a wonderful new social lifeas well as being lots of fun and a great stress buster!
Popchoir rehearses weekly on Mondays at the Chislehurst Methodist Church on Prince Imperial Road, BR7 5LX. From 8pm to 9.30pm
And for anyone feeling a little apprehensive about coming along, rest assured the room will be full of lots of friendly people waiting to help you and put you at ease. As one member said, “it’s quite simply the best decision I’ve ever made – I have made so many friends, have the best time and get to do things with Popchoir that I never thought could be possible for someone like me.”
